  1. A simplified form of English devised and
  2. promoted by C K Ogden in the 1920s and 1930s
  3. as an international auxiliary language;
  4. as a route into Standard English for foreign
  5. learners; and as a reminder to the 
  6. English-speaking world of the virtues of
  7. plain language. Its name derives from the
  8. initial letters of British, American,
  9. scientific, international, and commercial.
  10. Basic has a vocabulary of 850 words (plus
  11. names, technical terms, and so on), only 18
  12. of which are verbs or `operators'. Get
  13. therefore replaces `receive', `obtain', and
  14. `become', while buy is replaced by the phrase
  15. `give money for'.
